Film Studies:Snatch

I did these awhile ago, but decided to post them here. These are from the movie Snatch, its one of my favorite scenes. Thanks to a storyboarding class, I'm focusing a lot on Shot Progression.

Looking back at it, the scene I copied doesn't have a lot of progression, or at least what you'd expect as the traditional shot progression. It starts out in a close over the shoulder, OTS, and goes into a close up. Gradually the camera reviews where the characters are standing as Brad Pitt's character, Billy, gets knocked around the make shift arena.

But first, it starts in a OTS, in which the camera moves with Billy and then cuts into a series of close ups. I feel like the situation as well as the camera work puts you in Billy's corner, rooting for the underdog.

Then something strange happens. The big guy, Gorgeous George, is established on the right in the previous shot and I originally thought this could be a jump cut, but now I am on the fence. When Billy hits the floor he moves predominately to the right side, opposite of where he started. He looks over to screen left and that's where George is standing. Billy moves to screen left but George doesn't. I still feel that this is jarring though.

George walks over screen right to and precedes to pick up Billy. It goes from close up, to a medium shot of George picking him up and the camera tilts up Billy moves out of frame screen right while the camera . The next cut is to the fence which Billy is about to be thrown against. The next cut is cool, behind the fence when Billy is getting kicked, which makes you feel like an observer. Again, camera empathizes with Billy.

Next is a medium over the shoulder shot, Billy is on the floor on the right, George is left. It cuts to George on the right, but isn't jarring because its a match on action. Billy pops up on the left, where he started and again gets sucker punched or thrown to the right again.

Camera goes to a full body, nearly profile shot of Billy being pushed back up, it moves into a med close shot of him warming up. 

More close ups and A, B shots. George is in a bit of an up shot, making him seem more powerful. 

Cool shot progression here. As Billy takes off his shirt, the camera cuts to a profile. This hides what all the pikey spectators have known all along. Billy is a badass. 

Next is lights out. George moves forward, screen right, cuts to Billy who knocks his block off and Billy ends on the left, which has been established as the dominate side. 

Hope this helps, it was fun for me. One note I got on these boards is to draw loose. They're studies. Also drawing this tight takes too long... Keep it loose and learn! Thanks for reading.
